Lefulesele Lebesa has benefitted from the training course on Climate Governance, Diplomacy and Negotiations that was offered by the Leadership Program of the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES). She holds the PhD in Entomology obtained from the University of Pretorial which was in collaboration with the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Kenya and the Rothamsted Research, UK. She has over twenty- five (25) years of professional experience in the field of Agricultural Research and Development, both as a Researcher and as a Leader. She is currently the Director of the Department of Agricultural Research in Lesotho where she provides strategic direction to staff that includes Scientists and Professionals in the field. Lebesa also has a credible experience in research, project and program management related to Agriculture, Food Security, Nutrition Security and Climate Change (Adaptation and Mitigation) and has fostered relationships with various national and international research and research related organizations.
With the exposure in the field of Agricultural Research, she has played an instrumental role in the SADC region where she was a chairperson of the Board of Directors for 4 years for the SADC Plant Genetic Resources and subsequently the Chairperson of the of the Project Steering Committee (Darwin SADC Project no. 26-023) that was titled ‘Bridging agriculture and environment: Southern African crop-wild-relative regional network’. She works closely with the SADC-CCARDESA Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research Development for Southern Africa (CCARDESA) and she was the Chair for the CCARDESA General Assembly in 2021-2023. She has also represented CCARDESA in some of the continental meetings such as the 19th FURORUM Annual General Meeting in 2023, where the theme was “Transforming Higher Education to Sustainably Feed and Create Prosperity for Africa.
She is the member of the National Coordination on Climate Change (NCCC) whose role is to address the national climate change issues through engagement of various stakeholders to raise awareness and develop relevant policies and strategies for climate resilience. She has served in its sub-committees or Project Steering Committee and has also been part of the delegation to some of the Conference of Parties on Climate Change. She has delivered some talk or been in a panel of speakers highlighting Lesotho’s situation (challenges, successes and vulnerabilities) in relation to Agriculture and Food Security and Climate Change in the side events during the COP summits. Throughout the years, her exposure to different environments has led to the acquisition of a vast array of skills including leadership and coordination, resource mobilization, management and decision-making, organizational skills, financial management, negotiation skills, team building and project management.
