Joshua Sikhu OKONYA
Joshua Sikhu OKONYA, Program Officer for Agricultural Technology and Innovation at ASARECA, has significantly improved the understanding of the effects of global warming on agricultural insect pests in smallholder farming systems and the impact of climate change on household food security. Through his role, he fosters collaboration across 15 countries, promoting the transfer and utilization of proven climate-resilient agricultural technologies and innovations. Notably, he coordinates the ASARECA Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Alliance, a multistakeholder platform that enhances the coordination of CSA programs within Eastern and Central Africa. Previously, at the International Potato Center (CIP), he contributed to combatting malnutrition by promoting biofortified crops. His groundbreaking research revealed the presence of significant viruses and nematodes affecting crops in sub-Saharan Africa. Joshua’s Pest Risk Atlas for Africa provides essential insights into pest management amidst climate change challenges. With over 20 years of experience, he has spearheaded multiple donor-funded agricultural research projects, built adaptive capacity, enhanced resilience, and improved farmers’ knowledge of good agricultural practices in project sites. Joshua’s research interests include food systems transformation through the deployment of climate adaptation technologies and innovations; and supporting countries in implementing and monitoring their national adaptation plans for the agriculture sector. Currently pursuing a Doctorate Degree in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Hohenheim, Joshua holds a master’s degree in Tropical and International Agriculture and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Botany and Zoology.
