As the clock ticks down to tomorrow’s momentous gathering, the stage is set, and anticipation is high for the Training Workshop for Environmental Lawyers and Constitutive General Assembly of the Network of Environmental Legal Experts of Central Africa (REJEAC) in Kigali, Rwanda. With delegates, experts, and policymakers converging from across the region, all eyes are on this crucial event poised to reshape the environmental legal landscape in Central Africa.

But Why are we in Kigali?

To unravel this, we need to dive into the background and rationale behind the gathering.

Central Africa, blessed with rich natural resources, stands at a crossroads where economic development and environmental preservation intersect. From vast hydrographic networks to substantial mineral reserves, including the coveted coltan, the region holds immense potential. However, this potential comes with a stark reality: the urgent need for sustainable management of these resources.

The Congo Basin’s forests, spanning nearly 300 million hectares, are not only a biodiversity hotspot but also a critical carbon sink. Recent discoveries, such as the massive peatland storing billions of tons of carbon, underscore the region’s significance in the global fight against climate change. Yet, the exploitation of these resources often conflicts with environmental conservation efforts.

A Call to Action

Recognizing this pressing need, the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) took a bold step towards fostering sustainable development through the Central African Green Economy System (SEVAC). This visionary initiative aims to reconcile economic growth with environmental protection, echoing the spirit of international agreements like the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

However, realizing the vision of a green economy requires more than just political will. It demands a cadre of legal experts equipped to navigate the complex web of environmental laws and regulations. Thus, the stage is set for the REJEAC meeting, where lawyers and legal experts will converge to address critical gaps in environmental law and policy.

Empowering Legal Minds

REJEAC  has a clear mandate in this gathering: to raise awareness among lawyers, adopt governing texts, establish management structures, and chart a roadmap for the future. Through a series of discussions, participants will delve into multilateral agreements, regulatory reforms, and the harmonization of legislation across member states.

The objectives are ambitious yet attainable: to inform, empower, and unite legal experts in their mission to safeguard Central Africa’s natural heritage. By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, the meeting aims to lay the groundwork for a robust network of environmental legal experts poised to drive positive change across the region.

A Shared Vision

As delegates gather in Kigali, they bring with them not only their expertise but also a shared commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for Central Africa. From the adoption of governing texts to the exchange of national experiences, every moment of this historic gathering promises to shape the region’s environmental destiny.
